02 What Unibet Poker actually is - and who it is built for

Unibet Poker is not a skin of a larger network. It runs its own proprietary software, built and maintained by Relax Gaming, on a standalone player pool. That means every cash game seat and every tournament seat at Unibet is drawn from Unibet's own registered base - not shared with 30 partner skins on a common liquidity pool. The pool is smaller than PokerStars or GGPoker as a result. The tradeoff is that the room has full control over its product decisions, and those decisions have consistently pointed in one direction: recreational players first.

That philosophical commitment has real, concrete consequences. HUDs are banned. Hand histories are not downloadable. Players can create a new table alias up to three times per day, which means the bum-hunters who memorise screen names at competitor sites cannot track you across sessions. There are over 100 avatars to choose from. The lobby is colour-coded for ease of navigation, daily majors are designed to finish by 1:00 a.m. CET so employed players can sleep, and the buy-in range across tournaments runs from freerolls up to €100 without intimidating high-roller corridors that dominate the lobby on larger sites.

The parent company is Kindred Group - founded in London in 1997 as Unibet, later rebranded and listed on Nasdaq Stockholm. In October 2024, French lottery operator FDJ completed a €2.6 billion acquisition of Kindred, creating what is now FDJ United, the second-largest online gaming operator in Europe. Unibet remains the flagship brand under the combined group and continues to hold licences in the UK (UKGC), Malta (MGA), Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark, and several other regulated European jurisdictions. If regulatory trust matters to you - and it should - Unibet is about as safe as online poker gets.

03 Software and platform - the details that matter

The Unibet Poker client runs on desktop (Windows and Mac download), in-browser (instant play, supports up to four tables, identical graphics to the downloaded client), and on mobile via dedicated iOS and Android apps. The mobile app supports all game formats - cash games, MTTs, and HexaPro - without the feature stripping that plagues competitor mobile clients. If you play primarily on a phone or tablet, this works as a genuine primary client rather than a stripped-down companion app.

The UI is avatar-based, colourful, and deliberately game-like in its presentation. Long-time grinders accustomed to PokerStars' minimal interface sometimes find it jarring. That reaction fades quickly. The lobby is logically organised, tournament registration is simple, and the table software is stable - reports of client crashes or lag are infrequent in the player community. Unibet does not offer a fast-fold cash game format (no equivalent to Rush & Cash or Zoom), which matters if fast-fold volume grinding is your preferred format.

One meaningful constraint: Unibet does not allow hand history exports or third-party database software. Players serious about off-table study via solvers or population analysis tools will need to take manual notes or rely on memory. This is by design - the same policy that protects recreational players from HUD-equipped grinders also prevents grinders from building population databases against the Unibet player pool.

04 Rake: what you actually pay

The headline rake numbers at Unibet look high in the middle stakes (6% capped at €3 for NL100-NL400), but the critical detail is that Unibet only rakes hands that reach the flop. There is no rake taken on preflop pots where action ends before the flop is dealt. This is the standard industry approach - and notably different from GGNetwork, which rakes pots when there is a 3-bet preflop. In practical terms, Unibet's no-flop-no-drop rule means your effective rake rate is materially lower than the headline percentage suggests, particularly for tight-aggressive players who see fewer flops.

At the microstakes where most Unibet volume runs - NL4 through NL25 - the rake is genuinely competitive. NL4 runs at 2% capped at €0.50, NL10 at 3.5% capped at €1.00, and NL25 at 4.5% capped at €2.00. The Banzai short-stack game has unusually low rake across all stakes (2.0-2.5%) with caps topping out at €2 even at the highest stakes. Tournament fees are roughly 10% for MTTs and between 4-5% for Sit & Go formats, though all bounty-format MTTs were reduced to the 4.5-4.8% range following a 2022 schedule overhaul.

PLO cash games run at 3% capped at €1.50-€2.50 at lower stakes, climbing to 6% capped at €3 for PL100 and above. The PLO rake at lower limits is genuinely good and one of the better rates for recreational PLO players in the European market. Two-handed Sit & Go tournaments charge about 4% rake; five-handed SNG formats charge approximately 5%.

05 Loyalty and rakeback - the honest math

Unibet's loyalty system has 7 levels broken into 34 sub-stages. Progress is measured in XP where 1 XP equals 1 cent of rake paid. The system resets quarterly on 1 January, 1 April, 1 July, and 1 October. This quarterly cadence is a genuine downside compared to GGPoker's 12-month tier lock under Ocean Rewards - casual players who run well one quarter and poorly the next will see their tier drop back to Level 1 at the start of each new period.

The rakeback mechanics have two components. The first is a one-time cash or bonus point reward paid when you reach each new sub-level. These range from 100 Bonus Points (worth €1) at early stages up to €3,500 cash at Level 7-9. The second is a percentage-based constant bonus points rakeback that is always-on once unlocked: 3% from Level 2, rising to 10% at Level 5, 14% at Level 6, and 18% at Level 7. Players who reach Level 6 or 7 by quarter-end carry that multiplier into the following quarter from day one - a meaningful benefit for consistent grinders.

Unibet publishes unusually transparent actual rakeback data on their site, comparing advertised rates against what players have actually received. At the entry sub-levels the effective rate is 3-5%; at Level 5 (requiring roughly €2,100 in quarterly rake) average actual rakeback runs around 20-26%; at the top tier (Level 7-9, requiring €53,500 in quarterly rake) realised rakeback averages in the 57-61% range. The headline 60.5% maximum is achievable and not just a marketing number - but it requires volume that only serious full-time players will hit.
