Phenom Poker launched on October 7, 2024, founded by Matt Valeo (a player and entrepreneur from Colorado) and co-built with Brian Rast. It is the first online poker site structured as a decentralized autonomous organization (DAO): every table runs as a smart contract on the Polygon blockchain, player funds never leave personal crypto wallets until a hand is dealt, and 50% of the site's weekly net rake is distributed in USDT to holders of the PHNM token. The token can only be earned by playing or referring - not purchased on an exchange. The pitch is that the site cannot turn against its players financially, because the players are the owners.
The technical setup has real consequences for trust. Because Phenom does not custody funds, a hack of the site's servers cannot drain player balances. Every transaction is on-chain verifiable via PolygonScan. The RNG is certified by iTech Labs. The site operates under an Anjouan (Union of Comoros) gaming license and is managed by Phenom Poker S.A. in Panama, with the team physically based in Las Vegas. Tournament rake is applied at standard rates with buy-ins ranging from $5 to $500. The site currently runs around 50 tournaments per day, with guarantees between $50 and $10,000. The MTT schedule is growing but remains modest compared to the cash game offering.
06 Rewards: rakeback paid in equity
The loyalty program runs five tiers - Bronze (entry, 15% rakeback), Silver (17.5%), Gold (22.5%), Platinum (27.5%), and Phenom (40%) - with requirements based on rake generated within rolling time windows. At the Phenom tier, the requirement is 120,000 points in any 365-day period, where each $1 of rake equals 1 point. For high-volume players, that translates to $120,000 in annual rake, which is realistic at $25/$50 NL and above. Bronze applies automatically from day one with no minimum.
The token staking multiplier adds a layer on top of base rakeback. Players can stake PHNM tokens either in a Flexible mode (multiplier builds from 0.25x to 1.5x over 104 weeks, tokens remain unlocked) or in a Fixed mode (voluntarily lock tokens for 4-104 weeks, receive the maximum 1.5x multiplier immediately for the full lock period). At 1.5x multiplier applied to the Phenom tier, headline effective rakeback approaches 60% - though real-world figures depend on token price movements and conversion timing.
Separately, 50% of the site's weekly net rake is distributed pro-rata to all PHNM holders as a direct USDT payment. Token holders who do not even play on a given week still receive their share of the distribution. 07 Software and banking: honest assessment
The Phenom software was built from scratch by the in-house team. The browser client handles the full wallet stack (deposit, withdraw, P2P transfers), table settings, security logs, and referral tracking in one interface. Table settings allow layout customization, and the replayer lets you review hand histories in-session. There is no support for external HUDs, which is consistent with the site's security posture - no third-party software hooks into the client.
Banking is crypto-native. Primary currency is USDT on the Polygon network, which means deposits and withdrawals are instant and carry near-zero transaction fees.
